Northland Lake House

Overlooking one of Northland’s beautiful lakes, this house is poised in position over a natural gentle ridge. The view from afar reveals a collection of strong horizontal elements nestled within the surrounding planted backdrop. The project involved the substantial renovation and extension of an existing house. The lounge platform remained as did much of the rear of the house; the roof was replaced and the travertine stone cladding is continued through the dwelling to cohesively connect the new and old. The house is designed to maximise natural light at every opportunity, and unobtrusively frame the 270 degree view of the lake.

An interconnecting roof glides in an L-shape; the roof plane interlocks over two stepped platforms and hovers, only lightly connected in an effortless nod of shelter without enclosure.

The primary dwelling space is an elevated exterior stone terrace with a 4-metre high veranda roof, open on three sides to the environment. The prevailing Northwesterly winds are sheltered by the glass living room pavilion.
