Waiheke Island
Cut in to a steep terrain and overlooking the rocky coastline characteristic of Waiheke, this house harmonizes with the landscape while extending a platform toward the sea. The roof is an offset, upside down truss form, minimizing the bulk within the landscape. An upper level breezeway is revealed on entry through 3.6-meter barn doors, providing shelter from rain and sun and allowing ventilation. The platform deck with a solid balustrade contains the upstairs “room” and pavilion defining an edge while extending the volume of the breezeway, lounge, dining and kitchen. Internally materials were selected for texture and longevity. At a lower level, the ceiling is “rib-in-fill”, built with concrete ribs inter-spanned by timber planks. Externally, natural materials have been selected to weather and soften the house in the landscape and deep eaves shade reflection from the glass. The house is carefully integrated around an existing Pohutukawa tree, providing shade to a formed landscaped terrace below and a threshold of foliage to the rocky coastal views afar.
