Concealed within the centre of Remuera, this three-storey house is both firmly anchored to the ground while extending cantilevered rooms doubling as functional covered living areas. The approach optimised floor area to the site and footprint both for economy and aesthetic. A challenge was to connect living areas logically in north with views across towards to the existing pool area to the south. The ground floor plan is correspondingly driven by a north-south “axial transparency”. The floor is split level with the ceilings and soffits drifting uninterrupted and reinforcing the visual connection. A series of solid walls present towards the street for privacy with a set-back porch deliberately codifying the entry. The garage is cut into the ground to maximise afternoon sun to a refurbished pool. A hidden basement gym is accessed via a small-concealed stair internally. The horizontal cedar façade peels away from the roof and window joinery reinforcing a dynamic crouching tension between materials and cantilevered forms of lightness and gravity.
